The BE Project | Kacie and “Tempered”
Every year, The BE Project invites people into my studio to pause, reflect, and choose a word that will guide the next chapter of their lives. It is not about perfection or reinvention overnight. It is about honesty. Courage. Becoming.
When Kacie stepped in front of my camera, her word came from survival. From walking through breast cancer and realizing that strength is not something you perform for the world. It is something forged quietly, over and over again, in the hardest moments.
Her word was “Tempered.”
The BE Project exists because I believe that we are all evolving and every person deserves to see themselves as art while they are becoming the person they are meant to be.
Why She Chose “Tempered”
Kacie shared that she did not arrive at her word immediately. She signed up for the project knowing she wanted to participate, but unsure what would define this chapter of her life.
Then she heard her husband describe the word and went home to study its meaning. Once she did, it landed with clarity. Tempered is strength refined by fire. A resilience that is not loud, but enduring. A steadiness created by everything she has survived.
“It really perfectly defined me.”
What She Is Working Toward This Year
This year, Kacie’s goal is simple and profound.
She wants her life back.
Not the exact version from before cancer, because she knows that chapter has closed. But the rhythm. The confidence. The groove she once felt in her business, at the gym, and in her day-to-day life.
She is rebuilding from experience instead of memory.
And that kind of rebuilding is powerful.
What Grounds Her
When asked what brings her calm, Kacie answered without hesitation.
Her husband.
In the middle of fear, uncertainty, and recovery, his presence has become her anchor. A steady reminder that she is not walking this road alone.
What She Is Learning About Herself
Kacie is discovering just how strong she truly is.
Stronger than she ever imagined.
Stronger than the diagnoses.
Stronger than the nights filled with fear.
She is learning that the woman who came through cancer is not fragile.
She is forged.
Photographing “Tempered”
In the studio, tempered showed up as quiet power.
There was a steadiness in Kacie’s gaze. A grounded confidence in the way she held herself. Not performative. Not forced.
It was the kind of strength that lives under the surface, unshakeable because it has already been tested.
Her portraits carried resolve and grace in equal measure.
A Final Reflection
Kacie’s story reminds us that some of the strongest people you will ever meet do not look hardened.
They look calm.
They look focused.
They look like someone who knows what they survived and refuses to be defined by it.
What word would you choose for this season of your life?
What are you stepping into this year?
