The BE Project – In a world where you can be anything…. what will you be?
Meet Cindy. She’s been a participant from the beginning. I’ve been lucky enough to watch her story evolve and watch as she has become the powerful woman she is today. Read below for more of Cindy’s story and why she chose her word this year.
What word did you choose and why?
Cindy chose the word renewed. After a crazy year of COVID. “I kept praying God, give me a word. I was journaling one day and wrote “I have lost the song I once I had and I want it restored. In the meantime I had watched a church sermon from 2020 and it was about a revival. It was amazing and watched it over 3 days. As I was watching this service, the pastor said – maybe your sitting there and you’ve lost the song in your heart. He continued on and said you need that restored. I was crying and knew that God hears me. It was in that moment that I knew that “renewed” was the right word. I have felt such a pressing need to be inward focused. I am a caretaker by nature and I like the sense of achievement. 2020 really pulled the rug out from under me. I kept trying to focus on things like a job that made me miserable, getting my hair done every 3 weeks…. now, I have embraced the glorious color, i’ve shed a job that made me feel miserable. I can now focus on the things that are important. I want to remove anything that takes away from just being me.”
The word renewed means: To make like new again, restore to freshness, to make extensive changes. Do again, resume, replace, replenish.
What would you tell your kids if you could give them words of wisdom in their life.
Do what makes you happy.
What would you tell the 12 year old Justin?
Don’t listen to all the naysayers… God has given you so many gifts. Go use them.
What is The BE Project?
Have you ever stopped to think about who or what you want to be? Most often there is a word that drives you. If you sit in the silence and really think about what type of person you want to be… there will be a word, sometimes more than one word, that will guide you along and push you to keep being a better version of yourself. This photo project has become something that has touched my heart and hopefully those that have participated. I chose to shoot all of the images in black and white because I wanted the least amount of distractions. Just the human and the word. This project is the stories of some amazing people, their stories, and what these words mean to them. Some have participated each of the 3 years we have done this, some are new each time. It’s an amazing honor to follow along in their journey and document who they are becoming.

I challenge you to find a word that resonates with you. Who do you want to strive to be? What word leads you day to day? Join us in our project – what word will describe who you want to BE?
